...your local connection for all of your website, domain registration, and web hosting needs.
This page will explain the process of having a web site created and published on the internet.
The first thing you need to do is to select the name of the domain you wish to own.

The official definition of a domain is: "A domain name is an identification label that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control on the Internet..."

Basically, it's your website's "name."

If you own a business, you will most likely want your domain name to be exactly the same name as your business or something similar or related to your business in some manner. This helps associate the domain with your company name.

For personal websites, your domain name may be akin to your actual name (yourname.com), your interests (racingcars.com), or any other name you wish to call your website.

The "dot com" after the name you select is the most common TLD (top level domain). There are many others. You can choose to use .com or any of the other TLD's. There are some general "rules" about which TLD to use, but they are mostly guidelines and not hard and fast rules. Some alternate TLD's for your consideration would be:
.net (to signify that the site is for or about an NETwork)
.org (to signify that the site is for or about an ORGanization)
.me (to signify that the site is for or about a person)
.biz (to signify that the site is for or about a business concern)
.info (to signify that the site is about INFOrmation of some type)
...and there are others as well.

Note: once you own a domain, you can then have an associated email address. That is, if you register the domain "racingcars.com," you can then have an email address such as yourname@racingcars.com. In fact, your email address can then be ANYTHING@racingcars.com (joe@racingcars.com, info@racingcars.com, big-car-fan@racingcars.com, etc)

Now that you own your own domain name, you must purchase and register the name with a domain registrar.
You do not need to know how to do this, I can register the domain name for you. If I do register the domain name for you, it will be registered in your name, and will belong to you, not to me or Thunder Pages Web Design. Domain registrations are not permanent. You must renew the domain every year (you can purchase several years in advance if you wish). Domain registration is inexpensive, costing approximately $10.00 per year.

Next, you need to purchase a "hosting plan" in order for your domain to be active and available to others on the Internet. Again, you do not need to know how to have your domain hosted. Thunder Pages Web Design offers domain hosting services. Hosting plans vary determined by the amount of storage space you need or the types of services you need the host to provide. I will explain to you what hosting options are available to you to suit your site's needs. Hosting plans can be paid for on a monthly basis, or pre-paid for a year or more in advance. Monthly hosting costs vary, but most people can meet their hosting needs with a plan costing approximately $10.00 per month (or less).

Once you own a domain name, and set up a hosting plan, you need a website! People create their own websites, or if they do not know how to do this, they pay someone else to create the site for them. Thunder Pages Web Design is in the business of creating websites for people like you. You do not need to know exactly how your website will look or operate when having your first website created. I will explain various website options and features to you. We will discuss your business operations or personal website goals and your expectations of how your website will mesh with your existing business or meet your other website needs.

At that point, I will create a website based on your input and my interpretation of how your site should look and how it should operate. You will be consulted as necessary to ensure the site meets your expectations. After the site is completed, you will be able to make changes, add or remove features, or otherwise tweak the site to your satisfaction.

This entire process of going from purchasing a domain, having it hosted, and having a website created and published can be accomplished in as little as a week, depending on the size and scope of the website. In the case of large and/or highly specialized sites, the process could take a couple of weeks. I can give you an estimate of the the time it will take to get you up and running with your new personal or business website.
This overview is designed to give you a quick look at the process of getting a website.
