Lapopessa the Musical re-imagines the history of a 40-year relationship between a Bavarian nun (Sister Pascalina) and an Italian priest (Father Pacelli). This power couple rose to great heights within the Catholic church and played significant roles on the world political stage during World War II, much to the dismay of the antagonist Cardinal Tisserant. Their unconventional love relationship brought controversy and spurred conflict with the misogynistic Vatican hierarchy. These three central characters aspired to reach the top, while Pascalina struggled with the limits placed on women in the church.
